In 2018 I won the Gordon Pete Pickard Bursary Prize, where I received funding for a creative trip of my own design. I interrailed around Europe, making decisions about where to go by flipping a coin and my destinations being decided completely by chance. I cut off all contact with home and took with me just a sketchbook and pens to document the entire trip and discover what this self imposed isolation would produce. The mode of transport was itself important, as I’m often very claustrophobic and afraid of train travel. This, coupled with my complete inability and often frantic avoidance of decision making (hence the coin flipping) prompted a lot of intense self reflection and rumination, culminating in these selected extracts from the sketchbook.
